When they arrived, they bound Shanda with ropes they brought, and Melinda taunted her saying how pretty her hair was, and how it would be if someone chopped it all off. As Hope was asking questions about Shanda and Amanda’s relationship, Melinda pulled up, putting the knife to Shanda’s neck, and telling her, “Shut up, bitch.” Shanda was terrified, she was begging the girls to let her go the whole way to the Witches Castle. She got into the car, but wasn’t aware that Melinda was hiding in the backseat. Shanda felt fine going with the girls, because she believed that they were friends with Amanda. Toni and Hope knocked the door, and introduced themselves as friends of Amanda, and that she wanted to see Shanda at the Witches Castle. After that, the girls drove to Shanda’s house, she was staying at her father’s house at the time, and she was advised to turn of the TV and go to sleep soon. On the night of January 10, 1992, the girls drove to Melinda’s house to get a change of clothes, and she showed them a knife, saying that she’ll only be scaring Shanda. Although, in Laurie’s car, they revealed that they’d be “killing a little girl tonight.” They decided to invite 2 of their other friends, 15 year-olds Toni Laurence and Hope Rippey to a concert. Laurie was very into satanism, and had talked about wanting to kill someone near the Witches Castle, and Melinda wanted to get revenge on Shanda. Melinda had another friend, 17 year-old Laurie Tackett. Melinda though, was still angry at Shanda, and wanted to kill her. Shanda described to her new friend how annoying Amanda was, and how she wanted to be left alone. Amanda kept sending letters over and over, saying how much she loved Shanda, and how she missed her. When Shanda switched, she stopped talking to Amanda that much, which upset her. Her mother subsequently took Shanda out of the school and switched her to a Catholic school in November 1991. Her mother was also noticing how whenever Shanda was with Amanda, she’d fail all her classes, and even discovered Amanda taught her how to forge her mother’s signature on her report cards. She was shocked, because the contents of the note implied that Amanda and Shanda were in an intimate relationship. One day, Shanda sent a love-letter to Amanda, but it wasn’t sent properly, so her mother discovered it. But, Shanda continued to hang out with Amanda. When Amanda and Shanda went to a school dance with one another, Melinda told Shanda to “back off” from Amanda, or she’d get hurt. Both were on-and-off, but at the time of meeting Shanda, Amanda had broken things off with Melinda, and she was jealous over how close the two where. Something Shanda didn’t reveal to her mother though, is that Amanda used to send love-letters to her, and how she dated someone who was 2 years older than her, 16 year-old Melinda Loveless. Shanda’s mother, Jacqueline, was very against Shanda’s new friend, but Shanda told her that Amanda was a very nice girl, and that she wasn’t usually like that. Both Amanda and Shanda got detention for a week, but they ended up growing close during that time. Amanda came to her cousin’s defense, and threw Shanda on the ground. When she gave the ring to the boy, he criticized her for being involved in something she shouldn’t, and his cousin, 14 year-old Amanda Heavrin walked by, hearing the conflict. When Shanda started, she began making friends, and one of her new friends asked her to return a ring to a boy she’d recently broken up with. Her mother divorced again, and Shanda relocated in June 1991 to New Albany, Indiana, where she enrolled in Hazelwood Middle-School. Paul School where she was a cheerleader, and played on sports teams. When Shanda moved, she attended 5th and 6th grade at St. Shanda’s parents divorced when she was young, and she ended up moving away with her mother to Louisville, and she ended up remarrying.
